“Biology of Belief.” By Bruce H. Lipton, Ph. D.
Funny name for the book, don’t you think?
What does biology have to do with belief?
Or even better, what does belief have to do with biology?
As it turns out — everything.
But, they are opposite things, aren’t they?
One is material, the other is not. One you can touch, the other one you can hardly define.
What you deeply believe in, what’s programmed in your subconscious mind — that’s gonna run your body and your life. Not some Genes and DNA.
The thing is, we have almost the same DNA and amount of genes as mice do.
“Overall, mice and humans share virtually the same set of genes. Almost every gene found in one species so far has been found in a closely related form in the other. Of the approximately 4,000 genes that have been studied, less than 10 are found in one species but not in the other.
Both the mouse and human genomes contain about 3.1 billion base pairs (or chemical letters).”
Obviously, we are different from mice. Not only when we consider intelligence but physiology too.
How did we turn out to be so different, if we have so much in common?
And how is it we are so different from each other when 99% of our genes are exactly the same?
As it turns out it’s not what we have (what genes we have) defines our biology, our health, it’s what our cells and body decide to do with those genes.
Genes are nothing but the blueprint that our body uses to create whatever proteins and structures are needed to function the best in a certain environment. And that is the key here. Our environment.
“Just like you and me, cells are shaped by where they live. In other words, it’s the environment, stupid.”
“Genes are not destiny! Environmental influences, including nutrition, stress, and emotions, can modify those genes without changing their basic blueprint.”
~ Biology of Belief
This means, that we have more control and more responsibility, when it comes to our physical health, physical abilities, more than we could imagine.
It’s liberating, because now we don’t have to give in to our “destiny” to have or lack certain traits.
It also adds some pressure. It can be pretty uncomfortable, because it means that the problems we have in our physical bodies, the health and energy we experience on a daily basis, the amount of years we will have, the way we look — it’s all up to us, most of it, and we are the cause of most of the issues we have. Environment controls the expression of our genes. Most of the things in our environment we can control through our choices — choices of place where we live and work, our relationships, people we interact with, the way we interact with people and the world, the food we eat, the way we move, what we think, what emotions we experience, how we look at the world and ourselves — it’s all up to us, and that all affects WHICH genes are used/read by the cells to respond in a certain way to the environment. To create a certain body or disease, to thrive and grow, or to fight and be stressed.
I know it might sound a bit complicated and definitely can be against what you hear everywhere around you, especially from medical and pharmaceutical community — but that’s the way it is, if you really look at life, at reality, not at what others tell you.
Bruce H. Lipton, the author, is a trained and accomplished scientist, a professor, researcher — he got all these conclusions not from beliefs or theorizing about stuff — he did the research, he read a lot, he did a lot of experiments and that’s what he came up with, even though most of the modern science laughs at him not taking any of it seriously. Because it’s kind of not in-line with what we thought was truth before, what we believed was truth based on the assumptions that there is nothing beyond material world that we see. That is actually kind of stupid, because we know that when we didn’t have good enough telescopes, for example, and couldn’t observe the movement of the stars and the Sun, we thought that the Earth was the center of the Universe — that turned out to be false.
So now the same happens in the medical community — most scientists and medical professionals deny anything that they can’t register/measure using the methods and equipment we have (Except sometimes they ignore the stuff that can be measured just because they can’t explain it using current theories). It’s like they want to believe the Earth (the genes) is the center of the Universe and the answer to everything. Wouldn’t that be simple? We just copy, delete and paste the genes we like or don’t like and the problem is solved, right?
It’s a bit more complicated than this. But also kind of make sense. That the nature would make our cells adjust our biology according to our environment to have a better chance to survive and thrive.
Life (in various forms) is possible ONLY, when it adapts to the environment. Otherwise any life form will die — if it can’t adapt properly. And that’s why we humans thrive more than any other organism — we adapt much better. One of the reasons for that — the tools we create that help us to adapt better.
But our biology does the same thing.
Biology = Environment + Cells’ adaptation
That piece we can understand, right?
There is environment outside our body that changes, our body reads the signals from the environment, like, is it cold? is it warm? do we have enough food? is it safe?, and then our cells read certain genes to create different proteins to change our biology to respond/adapt accordingly to survive and thrive.
What’s up with the belief part then?
You see, we humans are quite complex creatures. Our cells created communities/tissues to better handle different tasks our body has to perform — brain, muscles, heart, lungs, digestive system — they are all made up of group of cells that have similar purpose, similar function, similar goal.
Our nervous system is kind of director of the whole orchestra. It is in charge of translating the signals we get from the environment into electrical signals and transferring them to our cells to act upon.
The problem with that, it can be a blessing or a curse depending on how we use or misuse it, our thoughts, our consciousness, our awareness, our beliefs can create signals that might not be an accurate representation of reality, of the environment and can make things worse or better.
If you are self-employed, you can look at it as stressful thing — you have to think how to get paid, find work etc., or you can think of it as freedom feeling liberated, inspired, energized. And these are completely different thoughts/responses. One produce stress response in your body, the other one is more of a positive feedback, that produces happy hormones in the body. And because of the thoughts the body is going to be either in a “fight-or-flight” state more often or in a happy state. And that changes a whole lot of things in the body on a cell level.
Your cells can’t see, so they trust your nervous system to tell them what environment is like outside, and if it feels like whole lot of stress, your cells will react accordingly producing different substances to protect you. And protection and growth/well-being/development/improvement can’t happen at the same time. Plus your immune system will get compromised, you will get increased levels of inflammation, your sleep will not be great, you won’t recover from exercise that well, you won’t heal your internal issues that well etc.
You see how it’s all related?
What you believe to be true will be transferred by your nervous system to your other cells and that will change your biology, your whole body functions.
The amazing thing about that — you can change your beliefs consciously.
The not so amazing thing — it’s kind of hard to see outside your beliefs, it’s hard to change your perspective and get out of your mind for a moment to see a bigger, a different picture.
The book is fascinating! It has a lot of information that will blow your mind! And it’s not some new-age metaphysical concept that is pure theory on the verge of being fiction. No. It’s a new science that will emerge little by little. We can already measure and see and explain it. Once we leave our dogmatic beliefs and theories of the past behind.
YOU might as well take advantage of it now.
Read the book. Change/Choose your beliefs. Change your biology.
Genes are not our destiny. Neither are our beliefs. We are free. More than ever.
