I didn’t believe in THE BEST DIET.
Till I tried this. The Dental Diet.
I did not expect, that all my diet experiments will lead me to a dental diet…
This book, we are about to explore, has been sitting in my e-library for a couple of months now — I haven’t been exactly enthusiastic about it!
I’ve been calling my way of eating lowcarb, keto, paleo, whole foods, sugar free, raw vegan — I’ve tried all of it, looking for perfection, not for myself, but for all of us.
All these diet theories have some basis in science, some basis in human diet history, and compared to the “modern supermarket” diet, all of them are a huge upgrade and a step forward for anyone on a journey to a better health. But also, all these diets have very few things, that are based on a solid body of human research, history and human trials — our nutritional requirements as species, as a biological organism.
It is obviously true, that we can survive on a variety of nutrients and diets. We can stay relatively healthy (depending on who you compare yourself to), avoiding processed foods with harmful additives. But what about thriving? Not just surviving?
What is a human equivalent of cow’s perfect pasture?
Juicy vibrantly-green grass field?
What’s that for a human being?
What is a human equivalent of cow’s perfect pasture?
Juicy vibrantly-green grass field?
What’s that for a human being?
Definitely not the isles of a modern supermarket. That is like cow’s factory life — pure survival with a full stomach.
Nutrition combined with best knowledge in biology, evolution and genetics. That’s what I’m looking for.
I can’t say I know all the details… yet. Nobody really does… yet.
But I’m closer, that I’ve ever been.
And it’s reassuring, that a few nutritionists (and obviously dentists — an evolutionary dentist to be exact) working on the cutting edge of nutrition and health research are moving in the same direction with me — discovering the deep and beautiful connection between our actual nutrient requirements to thrive (not just survive) and our long-lasting food traditions and cultures across the globe, true “value” of certain foods for humanity, the connection between our human genes and our food genes. It’s a really beautiful system — how it all works together, like a perfect symphony. And the cool thing is? We are just at the very beginning of it!
But honestly.
I never thought, that a book with one of the biggest nutrition aha moments for me, would be a book with a title “The Dental Diet”.
Paleo diets were our beginning of understanding, that not all foods, that we can put in our mouth, chew and digest are meant to be eaten to thrive.
Keto, plant paradox, intermittent fasting, sleep — every diet and lifestyle approach adds a little piece of wisdom to our nutrition knowledge.
What was the most fascinating about the dental diet for me — it laid out this beautiful concept of systematic nutrition. It’s not just the separate nutrients, that are important by themselves, like Calcium or Magnesium, or Vitamin D and A, it’s even more important to have them all together, otherwise they wouldn’t work, our body wouldn’t work. Like your car wouldn’t go with just 3 wheels. It’s not just important to eat carbs, fats and proteins — it’s even more important, where these nutrients, these foods come from, what genetic material they bring to the table. Because THAT ultimately changes how on a daily basis we experience our genes. It actually changes the way our genes are expressed! It changes our genes better and more powerfully than CRISPR and any cutting edge gene-editing tool.
I used to wonder, till very recently, why the hell with such a great diet, I was still having this dental issue — calcium, accumulating at the bottom of my front teeth? Now I know the answer and I don’t have this problem anymore. It’s fascinating, how just adding one vitamin from one food source can change the whole picture in just a couple of days!
It’s like struggling with this puzzle for months and years finally putting in the last piece and having the whole picture!
And now I know, that my arteries are in a better place. I got even more flexible. I recover faster from my workouts. And now I know, that my teeth are one of the fastest and clearest way to see, how I’m doing health wise, how I’m doing inside.
I used to think, that our teeth are the last place to look for the signs of health, they are slow to change, they are like bones — now I learned, it’s the exact opposite. You can change your teeth, your dental health (and your whole body health) by changing, what you eat in a week or just a few days.
The Dental Diet: The Surprising Link between Your Teeth, Real Food, and Life-Changing Natural Health by Dr. Steven Lin
The book helps you to learn how to easily build your meal plan around foods, that support your best dental health (based on all the data available to us). It helps you to eat your calcium, magnesium and zinc the right way accompanied by foods rich in fat-soluble vitamins and a variety of fibers from plant foods, that take care of our gut health, without which we can’t thrive and live disease-free with lots of energy, maintaining healthy weight.
I’m gonna share with you the basics of the dental diet, that I honestly believe is the best research/data-based theory about a healthy diet for this animal, the human-being. It describes the best human version of the cow’s vibrant-green grass field.
But before that, I want to once again emphasize this important concept, the concept I want you to engrave in your mind somehow — the food you eat, it’s information for your genes how to express themselves — robust and healthy, or sick and weak. Food, just like you, is a bunch of genetic material wrapped in a neat molecular-chemical package. And genes talk to each other. Your genes, your food genes. Make sure to keep YOUR genes in a good company. You are after all the average of what you surround yourself with — choose your food wisely.
…the food you eat, it’s information for your genes how to express themselves — robust and…
I also want to share with you my meals I’ve been having lately. Not saying it’s the best meal plan for everyone, but it’s pretty damn delicious and nutritious!
I’m still mastering the art of eating the best I can according to our ancestral wisdom, according to the latest research and human data, to my personal experience and experience I get from my work with clients.
I’m feeling better than I’ve ever had, and I don’t think I’m at my best yet. I’m looking forward to where our nutrition wisdom will lead us from here.
I’ll keep you posted!
PS If you need help to walk you through your nutrition, health, fitness, weight loss struggles, if you need someone to help you through plateaus and hips of nutrition/health data — I’m accepting clients just like you, with different lives, goals and struggles on a journey to be, feel and live as your best, getting the most of this beautiful journey we call life.
