As I was out on my run this morning, thinking about diets, nutrition, books I want to read, research I want to do, I had this thought, based in bits and pieces on all my diet experiments, that I’ve started almost 2 decades ago as a kid, based on all the books I read, all the podcasts with scientists I listened to, all the research I studied, I got this thought — what if people, doing all this amazing research, still don’t see the forest for the trees, falling in love with one micro nutrition/diet/food theory after another, completely denying the bits of truth in “opposing” theories, digging deeper and deeper into micro and macro nutrients research, coming up with new hypotheses and theories, forgetting about the bigger picture, or some important part of it, forgetting that for the largest part of human history not only we ate whole foods ONLY prepared in some fashion, not only we ate ONLY certain kinds of plants and animal products, skipping the poisonous, but ALSO we ate as a part of our daily diet, whenever it was available to us, WHOLE FRESH RAW FOOD.
WHOLE FRESH RAW FOOD. — All the parts EQUALLY important.
Right from the source, not cooked, not dehydrated, not boiled, not frozen.
WHOLE FRESH RAW FOOD.
You’ve probably heard about raw food diet, I didn’t invent that, I was a total raw vegan for 4 years. I didn’t invent paleo (ancestral, no grains, no beans, no dairy and processed foods) diet either. Nor did I invent the whole foods diet.
Raw vegans religiously believe, we must eat raw food only (no cooking), they believe, that all animals eat only raw food and that’s why they don’t have all these degenerative diseases we as humans developed, but then I like to say — humans are also the only animals that build cities and fly to the stars planning to colonize other planets, don’t you think cooked food and more nutrients available because of that might have something to do with more sophisticated brain development? Human brain is one hungry beast! We as species have “hungrier” metabolism, needing more calories per 1kg of body weight than our closest relatives in animal kingdom — apes.
All that above aside, junk food nonsense aside (Junk, we sell as food these days, is not suitable for human consumption. If you still doubt it, try eating ONLY that junk “food” for a month. Wait, someone did that already for you), junk food nonsense aside, any human being, I believe, needs WHOLE RAW + COOKED FOOD DIET for optimal performance, mental and physical, and maximum longevity.
Now, what our body can tolerate, on top of the diet rich in the best WHOLE RAW + COOKED FOODs, is a matter of personal tolerance, genetics, lifestyle and experiments. But one thing I can tell you for sure, from my experience, my clients’ experience, from observations and studies — the less WHOLE RAW FOOD is in your diet, with EVERYTHING, and I mean it, EVERYTHING in tact, the sh*ttier you’ll feel eventually. You might lose weight on a low carb diet, on high fat diet (I did it too), or any other diet, but if you are shooting for maximum health, performance AND longevity, without WHOLE RAW FOODs in your diet — you gonna lose, and believe me, I know what I’m talking about…
So, what’s the best and healthiest diet for modern, healthy, fit, smart and young-for-centuries homo sapiens?
