You are NOT what you eat.
You are who you feed.

I’ve recently changed my perspective on the ways nutrition, our diet, food we eat works in our body.
BIG TIME!
It was a big turn for me. I’ve been involved in nutrition field, since I was a teenager — first to cure Vitiligo, then for athletic performance, then for body re-composition and my work as a personal trainer/weight loss coach/health and performance coach.
So what is THE BIG CHANGE?
I always thought, till very recently, that it works like this. We eat and then our body transforms food in one way or the other into different substances, that change the way we feel and look, the way we perform. And yes it’s very individual, what our bodies do with the food, and how our body achieves its nutritional and performance goals, and yes different foods work differently, quality and origin matters, macronutrient content matters, timing matters.
And of course I was aware of our microbiome, all those bacteria, that live in our gut and actually everywhere in and on our body. I was aware, that there are good kinds of bacteria and bad kinds. The ones, that produce beneficial for us compounds, that promote good health and energy levels, that improve functions of our body and our ability to get proper nutrition from our food. And the ones, that produce toxins and undesirable substances, that promote ill-health and undesirable behavioral patterns, our bugs control our behavior too — that’s why you might be having cravings for bad-for-you food, and that’s why your mood can fly all over the place, turning you into a drama queen. Those bugs in your gut and everywhere, 100 trillion of them (you are only 10% human, the rest is bacteria), those bugs, they want to thrive, and if you don’t have the good ones — man, you in for a ride, don’t even dream about being in good health and shape, if you made a home for fat bacteria in your gut, feeding them all this processed junk.
You see, it’s not the body, your metabolism, that control whether you store energy as fat, getting obese or burning it off staying lean, it’s not the calories, carbohydrates, fats and proteins, that turn you into a lean bean or a fat cow, that can barely move. It’s who you feed, that matters — bad bugs, that promote your fatness, or good bugs, that make you lean and active super-achiever.
They, scientists, did experiments on real people and many more on mice, transplanting fecal matter with all the bugs, that live in someone’s colon from lean individuals to fat ones and vice versa and the results? Metabolism and behaviors of the individuals changed turning lean beans into fat cows and vice versa. Fascinating, right?
The most fascinating piece for me, as I’m all about personal responsibility for our health and fitness, the most fascinating piece was — we can change our bacteria, by eating the right foods and engaging in the right kind of behaviors, changing our environment and lifestyle.
And then after a period of time, all of a sudden we start craving salads, broccoli and sauerkraut — I never thought my favorite food would be slightly roasted Brussel sprouts with garlic, olive oil and black pepper! I even question myself now, “What do I like more? Brussel sprouts or chocolate?” Seriously.
That was a huge turn in my views, in my world model.
You are not what you eat — You are who you feed.
I highly recommend to you this book on a subject of your microbiome to gain a better understanding of how deep that influence goes, from your metabolism to your behavior, to your mood, to your nutrition, strong or weak immune system, your performance.

One piece of advice, that I personally noticed makes a HUGE difference, when it comes to health, energy levels and getting lean, restoring your metabolic health.
Eat fiber from leafy greens and non-starchy vegetables (and look into prebiotic foods).
That’s the food for your lean bugs, guys.
You can leanout really fast, eating lots and lots of greens and non-starchy vegetables (on top of other foods). That what helps me, when I need to get super lean. Not the protein or fat. Or staring myself. FIBER!!! The right kind of fiber.
